Filmmakers At The Time May Not Have Understood What They

Filmmakers at the time may not have understood what they were doing by making their films so heavily fixated on connecting men to violence, war and being successfully fighters. Granted, these gender norms had already been established long before the inception of film as a mass medium, but films were able to enforce these stereotypes nationally and globally in a way society had never seen before. Films about American society during the Second World War did not just define what masculinity was, but they also led men to internalize these stereotypes as the only way to be and to conduct themselves. Men were taught unattainable ideals of strength, capability and invulnerability, and this made them believe that if they were not determined to be†¦show more content†¦Throughout the whole film, Norval struggles to find his place in society since he is unable to go to war. Early in the film, you can see the collision between what society determines a man to be and how that differs fr om Norval’s situation. In the very first scene, Norval talks about how he tried to get into the army but how every time he would be examined the spots would come. Immediately, it becomes clear that when Norval fails to be considered enough to serve in the army, his sense of masculinity is gone and he is struggling to recover his identity. In one particular scene, when Trudy and Norval return to Trudy s house the morning after they supposedly went to the movies together, Norval and Trudy s father have a talk on the porch where Trudy s father asked when Norval and Trudy are going to get married. When Norval responds unaware of what Trudy s father is referring to, Trudy s father is quick to respond by saying that he needs to be direct and to be a man. The nervousness and uneasy nature of Norval are not what a man should be and the film is very clear in making that distinction known by his interactions with other male characters in the film. Character Analysis of Reverend Parris free essay sample

Character Analysis of Reverend Parris If it were not because of the self-preserving and greedy nature, also the paranoia of the people in Salem, the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 would most likely not have occurred. One of those people is Reverend Parris, who is the minister of the church in The Crucible. All Reverend Parris cares about is his reputation/good name and the amount of wealth he has. He is paranoid that there is a faction of townspeople that are trying to get him thrown out of his position.Because of his need to preserve his good name he goes along with the false proceedings of the witch trials. In the end he starts to doubt the trials for the same reason. He also suppresses evidence that would have discredited the court, but instead the court becomes stronger and make is impossible to stop. Reverend Parris One of Parris’s only concerns is the preservation of his good name in the town of Salem. (pg. 11) He does not want the actions of his foolish daughter and niece to destroy the work that he has put in for years to be ruined because his daughter and niece’s foolish action. Parris is also a self-centered, greedy man who only looks out for numero uno, himself. For example, he gets into a quarrel with John Proctor about having to pay six pounds on fire wood when he gets paid a yearly salary of sixty six pounds, â€Å"I regard that six pound as part of my salary. I am paid little enough without I spend six pound on fire wood. † In addition, He also claims that someone of his esteemed credentials (graduating from Harvard College) would get paid much more than he is.He always wants more; he demands the deed to the house he lives in, which goes against years of time-honored tradition. Finally, he demands to have gratuitous golden candlesticks on his pulpit when he preaches instead of cheap pewter candlesticks that were given to him by a church member. In the end of the Crucible when Abigail plunders his safe where he keeps his thirty two pounds he is racked with depression and sorrow. Taking into account all these things Reverend Parris does not seem like much of a god faring man to me.Finally, Parris is a paranoid and fearful man. He thinks that everyone is out to get him and relieve him of his position as minister. He thinks that there is a faction within his church that wishes to overthrow him and would do anything to get him removed. He knows that if this faction discovers what his niece and daughter did it could lead him to be fired from his job, as he says to Thomas Putnam, â€Å"In my house? In my house, Thomas? They will topple me with this. (pg. 6) Because of his fear that he will be thrown out he suppresses evidence that evidence that could have prevented the witch trials, consequently his actions lead to the death of nineteen innocent people. In conclusion, because of the greedy, self-preserving, and paranoid nature of the community nineteen innocent people were killed. Parris could have stopped this needless murder, but he is a selfish man that only cares about preserving his good name within in the community. Also, he is a greedy, self-centered man who always wants more. Instead of pewter candle sticks he wants gold candlestick and he also wants the deed to the house he lives in even though it goes against tradition. Finally, he is a paranoid man who is always worried about being fired from his job. This is also one of the reasons why he suppresses the evidence about the witch trials. All in all even though Reverend Parris is supposed to be a holy man, but he just seems like a crooked man who is only in it for himself.

The Allegory of Plato an Example by

The Allegory of Plato: The Distinction between Reality and Illusion Plato is one of the most relevant figures in philosophy. He has been a great influence to all the other philosophers who emerged after him. His works are mostly in the form of a dialogue, allowing readers to easily understand his philosophy. One of the most recognized texts attributed to Plato is the Allegory of the Cave, which conveys an important element of his philosophy through a conversation with Glaucon. Through the allegory, Plato tries to illustrate the difference between how illusion and reality is perceived by people. Need essay sample on "The Allegory of Plato: The Distinction between Reality and Illusion" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed An allegory is that which represents something apart from itself. Therefore, the Allegory of the Cave by Plato is more than just a story. It conveys a message beyond the given instances indicated in the text. It actually illustrates one of the most integral aspects of Platos philosophy. In the allegory, Plato tries to distinguish between enlightenment and ignorance of humanity (Plato 79). He gives out a specific scenario, one which includes prisoners in a cave. Plato describes this cave as one which has an entrance that allows sunlight to come into the cave. Inside the cave, there are prisoners who have been there since their youth. Their legs and necks are bound, forcing them to only look ahead. The prisoners could see through a curtain wall which is also found inside the cave. Somewhere high above, there is a fire (Plato 79). The fire creates shadows of those people which move behind the curtain walls, shadows that the prisoners can see. Because of their bondage, these shadows are the only things that the prisoners can see. Plato gives another scenario. One of the prisoners is freed from the condition he was trapped in since he was a child (Plato 80). For the first time, this allows him to see for himself the fire and the objects behind the shadows. Initially, he is blinded by the light; afterwards, his eyes adjust in time to see the outside world (Plato 80). Plato presents yet another scenario. The freed prisoner goes back to the cave (Plato 81). This time, he is blinded by the darkness; his exposure to the light made him this way. In the instance that he was to discriminate against the darkness, the other prisoners would consider him crazy (Plato 81). They would not understand him, as all they know are the shadows that they see. If the remaining prisoners in the cave can take a hold of the prisoner who has returned, the former would kill the latter. The Allegory of the Cave tries to illustrate how human limitations can blur the lines between reality and illusion. The allegory presents an analogy of how Plato perceives the limitation of man. The prisoners in the allegory represent humans. The prisoners have been bound since the beginning; their eyes have been limited to see only shadows. Because it is the only thing they see, it becomes reality for them. The objects behind the curtain wall represent reality, while the shadows are merely illusions. Under the given conditions, the prisoners consider the shadows as the real things. Humans are like the prisoners. The human body limits an individuals ability to determine between reality and illusion. From the beginning, a humans perception of reality is distorted by his sensory experiences. What is real for him is that which he has experienced from his senses, just as the shadows were considered reality by the prisoners. There is a resistance by the prisoners to embrace reality which can be found in the last scenario given by Plato. In the instance that a prisoner who had seen the outside world would return to the cave and tell the other prisoners the real story behind the shadows, he would be perceived as a fool and might even be killed in the process. The reason behind this is that only the freed prisoner is aware of the truth; everybody else is still bound to their ignorance. If the freed prisoner was to relay what he had seen to the others, the prisoners would not believe him. How can the prisoners believe his stories when all they can see are the shadows? The shadows are all they experience; it is the only reality available for them. To hear a testimony of another experience would surely be met with opposition. The knowledge of the freed prisoner would make him appear insane; the others would assume that the world beyond the cave has damaged his eyes (Plato 81). The so-called damage would then d iscourage the others from breaking free of their bondage and would render freedom from the cave as an unworthy endeavor (Plato 81). There is a reason why the remaining prisoners do not want to see the outside world. There is a reason why they do not want to know the truth. For most of their lives, the shadows have been reality for them. It is all they know as true. They have long held such perception that to do otherwise would be extremely difficult. When the freed prisoner tells them the truth, they are challenged. It is almost an insult for the prisoners to have their long held belief questioned. The prisoners do not want to know the truth because the experience would be similar to what the freed prisoner experienced. In the beginning, the freed prisoner was blinded by reality; it took time for his eyes to adjust to reality. For the remaining prisoners, to know the truth would also be a blinding experience. It will take a long time for them to break free from their illusions and adjust their eyes to reality. The cave is their comfort zone; there is much hesitation in their part to leave it for the outside world . This is the reason why the prisoners do not want to know the truth. They want to spare themselves from a blinding experience. In a way, the situation is similar to humans. Humans are bound to their sensory experiences and to the illusions that these experiences provide. However, the senses do not suffice in providing people an access to reality. Therefore, one must go beyond the senses and illusions to reach reality. The only way one can experience reality is through reason (Plato 82). In the allegory, the prisoner was only immersed in reality when he was free from the cave. Reality was only experienced by the prisoner when he went to the outside world and discovered the real story behind the shadows and reflections. In this case, humans can only experience reality through the use of reason. Plato believed that people can only grasp reality if reason was involved. People should not rely on their senses to know the truth; thinking is more important than using the senses. The importance of thinking is the reason why some people find it easier to retain their illusions. They mostly rely on their senses, even t hough it presents inaccurate information. Thinking would force them to go beyond what they thought is true; instead of their senses, they would have to resort to reason. The transition from senses to reason would be similar to the prisoners dilemma: the adjustment from darkness to light. Platos Allegory of the Cave is an illustration of the problematic distinction between reality and illusion. It represents how people can mistake illusion for reality given the limitations their bodies provide. In the allegory, the prisoners represent the people. Their sense of reality is false, as their eyes only allow them to accept illusion as the real thing. It is only when they can come out into the outside world they can they truly experience reality. For humans, the physical world only presents illusions. Their senses can grasp these illusions as reality. Plato believes that reason should be used to truly experience reality. Hence, the problem between reality and illusion can only be resolved through the use of reason. Work Cited Authors last name, authors first name. Title of the book. LinkedIn + Microsofts Resume Assistant Friend or Foe

LinkedIn + Microsofts Resume Assistant Friend or Foe The biggest conversation about LinkedIn nowadays seems to be about the perils of Resume Assistant, a child of LinkedIn and Microsoft’s recent marriage. LinkedIn touts Resume Assistant as an integration between LinkedIn and Microsoft Word that will help you accurately reflect who you are and what you’ve done, in a way that is tailored to the role you’re aspiring to. But is it all that? What is Resume Assistant? According to Rock Your Resume With Resume Assistant From LinkedIn + Microsoft, this is how Resume Assistant works: If you are a Microsoft 365 subscriber, you can open Resume Assistant from the Review tab in Word. You can then enter a position and industry, and Resume Assistant will pull information from millions of people’s public profiles on LinkedIn that match that position and industry. You can then use the examples to inspire your own resume content and â€Å"make sure you stand out from the crowd.† LinkedIn claims, â€Å"Ditch the one-size-fits-all resume†¦ Resume Assistant provides the top skills other professionals in your desired role and industry have, as well as job requirements from real job postings. You can then think about how your applicable skills can be transferable for the role you want, then tailor your resume to fit that role.† All this sounds too good to be true. It requires users to think hard on their own, resist the temptation of copying and pasting, and basically write their own resume. I’m not sure it will make resume writing easier for anyone who does it right. Perhaps it will provide some valuable research, but beyond that, I’m not clear on its usefulness. Is Resume Assistant Evil? One of the most vocal opponents of Resume Assistant is Donna Serdula, who claims LinkedIn is committing â€Å"Profile Plagiarism.† I don’t know about that. Certainly a diligent person can do their own search for people with their position title, and model their profile or resume off someone else’s. My understanding is that what Resume Assistant does is crunch numbers so you get a more accurate picture of what skills are the most important to include in your profile. It seems to me that Resume Assistant is streamlining a process, not committing plagiarism. What is disturbing to me, and to Donna, is that LinkedIn and Microsoft have failed to inform LinkedIn members that Resume Assistant will pull information from your profile unless you opt out. Even if all the information is from your public profile and your name is not attached to it, making people’s profiles automatically available for scanning is a bit sneaky, if you ask me. Here’s how to opt out of the Resume Assistant so your information is kept out of people’s hands who are using the program. Note that if your profile is public, resourceful folks could still find your profile and â€Å"flatter† you with imitation. Click on your profile image thumbnail in the upper right corner. From the drop-down menu, select Settings Privacy. On the Privacy tab, scroll down to Data privacy and advertising, and under Microsoft Word, flip the switch to No. Or,  follow this link. I’m choosing for now to keep my information public and available to Resume Assistant. At least I know I’ll be contributing quality material to those who need it. How Does Resume Assistant Really Work? Unfortunately, at this time, I am not able to tell you exactly how Resume Assistant works. I had to go to Microsoft’s article, Write your best resume in Word with help from LinkedIn in Resume Assistant, to figure out that it’s supposed to show up under my Review tab in Microsoft Word. Microsoft provides a bit of practical information, including how to opt out of having your information used. None of the information I could find on LinkedIn actually explains how to start using it. I’m hoping that will change soon. One big question that remains for me is about the quality of information that shows up on Resume Assistant. Believe me, I’ll be testing it out as soon as that option appears in my version of Word! I’m concerned that low-quality information could steer people in the wrong direction as they’re writing their resumes. There might be something I’m not aware of, but I would not want to take just anyone’s profile in my industry and model my resume after it. I can’t emphasize enough that someone else’s achievements are samples only! If you imitate their achievements exactly, you are either committing plagiarism or you have some work to do in distinguishing yourself in your career. Will You Use Microsoft’s Resume Assistant? While Resume Assistant seems like a marketing ploy to get people to subscribe to Office 365, for me, the jury is still out on whether might actually have true value. I hope you’ll test it out if it’s available to you and you’re looking for ways to improve your resume. Perhaps it will be the resume writers’ new favorite tool! I look forward to sharing more as the opportunity to use Resume Assistant becomes a reality. Leadership, Teambuilding, and Communication Essay - 6

Leadership, Teambuilding, and Communication - Essay Example Trait theories recognize the characteristics and behaviors of people across the globe. It states that leadership is an inborn quality and that leaders cannot be raised. This is a hypothetical picture of an ancient belief which explains that when a group of people were facing extreme problems, a hero appeared and led them towards success. Even in today’s world, some people believe that leadership is an inborn quality (Fairholm, m. R., & Fairholm, g. W., 2009). The leaders with the trait theory have characters such as: decisiveness, assertiveness, cooperative approach, ambitiousness, alertness, etc. In business, managers can use the information from the theory in order to assess their positions in the firm and to evaluate how they can strengthen their position. It helps them to have in depth knowledge about their own identity and the way they can affect others in their firm. This theory helps the manager to understand their weaknesses and strengths, thus, they come to know about how they can develop and enhance their leadership qualities (Lussier, N., & Achua, F., 2010). This theory suggests that not all the leaders who are successful have same characteristics. Theory states that the success of leadership depends on the correspondence between the style of a leader and the demands of a situation. This means that the effectiveness of leadership style is a function that is used in the given situation. (Judge, 2002)According to this model, a manager must know his style of leadership, diagnose the situation and then look for the coincidence between his style and the specific situation. This theory suggests that levels of directive and supportive behavior of a leader should be based on the level of staff available. Managerial behavior occurs when a leader uses one-way communication to specify the duties of his followers. The supportive behavior occurs when the leader uses bi-directional

Small Group Dynamics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Small Group Dynamics - Essay Example I was considered to be the team leader for my group so I started with the point that I am glad to speak about the industrial training that we have went just before a couple of days. And i also continued with the point that the industrial visit was really a good thing because we were able to gain more knowledge regarding how the telecommunications worked. so i raised a question to my friend arthy asking what she is thinking about the industrial training she was very bossy and adamant so she turned the topic to a different side saying that the training was of no use because we were there hardly for a day and a half. So she also stated that nothing could be possible within that time to learn or to implement things. For which another mate Dhiranya started to tell i am sorry arthy i do go with Dharni because it taught us something. She also said that if you think that we have been there for nothing, so far we were learning about the telecommunications only theoretically so it was of no use to know how the things will look like, only after visiting the place we were able to see some receivers, transistors the network communication and all the other technical things she completed her point saying like this and waited for the reply. There as a leader I have to speak something and i started to stick on to the point and said my friend arthy I too go with dhiranya saying that so far if some one asks us to speak about something regarding telecommunication we would have explained them in a theoretical way but only after the training we could explain them in a better manner for an instance we can even draw and show them the things and the technical machines that we saw there. And I soon realized that Vidhya was left alone without giving her the time to discuss with us and said straightaway to the team stating that let Vidhya have her turn to think about the situation. vidhya started saying thank you for giving me a turn and said that she would go with rest of the team stating that she had some practical knowledge and it was also a useful thing to be included in her study material. She also said that she was able to know certain things that how to sort out a problem for a particular telephone connection among the million wires interconnected there. But suddenly arthy rose to a great height and said if you say so will you be able to set a default tele line straightaway without any help. This was a great conflicting thing to our group and soon accommodating to the situation Vidhya continued and said of course I will be able to do that if I have some proper training as I know where the things lie but the next step of disconnecting and joining the wires would be possible by proper training. Again arthy avoided the point and said so this was entirely a true waste of time. There of course i used my creativity and my bossiness to put a full stop to the point and said it will be a mere waste if you think that the explanations given by the faculty for our lessons are also the same as the training that we visited. Though she was taken aback for a few minutes she was finding her mistake and compromised with the answer that was given by me. So at last she said of course the training was interesting and some what helpful to an extent. But, she looked taken aback and

This Is Just to Say Essay Example for Free

This Is Just to Say Essay Out of all the poems that we have viewed in the first two weeks of class the one that caught my attention was the poem by William Carlos Williams, â€Å"This is Just to Say†. This poem was so short and so simple but seemed to be so much more than what it really is. The poem by William Carlos Williams; â€Å"This is Just to Say† is difficult to dissect. In shorter poems the perception of what it actually means I feel is harder to find. Being the poem is only 28 words and no word is over 3 syllables it seems that this was an intended note left for someone to find. This poem; This is Just to Say was written in 1934 and it is still unknown to whom or what the poem was intended for. As for I reading this poem it seems as if this was left for a lover. I have intended that this note was left for a lover because they have made the plums the center piece of the poem. Fruits in general are an exotic and forbidden form of love and they use the plums in a seductive way to the reader. I came to the generalization that the plums were not edible for the fact that the last ten words in the poem are; â€Å"forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold†; the sender of the poem is pleading for forgiveness for the fact of eating the frozen plums. Also the fact, that the plums were in an icebox so sweet and so cold it feels as if they were not meant for eating. The perspective I am getting from this is that they wanted to let the reader know they were there intended to leave a trace behind and not just a note. It seems as if the writer knew what they were doing and the plums were a significant meaning to the reader and that the poem took little to no time to write. The poem illustrates great detail in so little words giving you an endless amount of thought to why the sender has eaten these so sweet and so cold plums that were in the icebox. The sender seems as if they planned to write their receiver a note and had to input a secret message as to why they actually have written it. In many cases poems are about love and hidden messages that only the writer can tell you the intended meaning of it. Due to the fact that William Carlos Williams never answered the questions asked about this specific poem he wrote in 1934 his answers to all our questions will remain unknown forever.

Common Themes in Poetry Essay -- Mid-Term Break Follower Poetry Poems

Common Themes in Poetry After reading and analysing numerous poems, I have chosen two examples of the famous Irish Poet, Seamus Heaney's work: 'Follower' and 'Mid-Term Break'. Both poems relate to the poet's past, and are certainly associated with a specific 'loss' of a loved one - one a literal loss, and the other a subconscious loss. 'Mid-Term Break', which I found to be a very touching and poignant poem, describes the loss of the poet's younger brother, Christopher when Heaney was a child, hence the poem is of a childhood tragedy as well as a loss. It's set in three places - the introduction is situated in the college sick bay; the main body of the poem is set in Heaney's brother's funeral, and the final setting is the small child's bedroom. The poet is awaiting his neighbours' car in the college sick bay, as they're going to escort him to the funeral. Evidence is given of 'death' in the second line: - "Counting bells knelling classes to a close" This metaphorical sentence creates a morbid atmosphere from the out-set, and the alliteration and hard consonants suggest that the 'wait' for his neighbours' car is excruciatingly long and daunting which underlines two things - childhood impatience and the fact that something is troubling him. 'Change' is sensed here also due to the fact that his neighbours are driving him home - as we know, the negative change is Christopher's death. Within the aspect of 'change', this is merely the 'tip of the iceberg', as many more unfamiliar experiences await him. The 'child's prospective' is cleverly brought into the second, third, fourth and fifth stanzas as a consequence of the poet's confusion and the contradictive scenes he witnesses as he walks into the fa... ...Seamus Heaney's childhood' is a fair summary of 'Mid-Term Break' and 'Follower', both linked to a specific loss - one, the death of the poet's four year old brother in a road accident; the other, the loss of the poet's father to old age. Both poems show the poet's use of transforming a situation from bad to good: in 'Mid-Term Break', 'the room' is not a deathly enclosure with a 'corpse' within, but a scene of tranquillity soothed by candles, with a little boy 'wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple' peacefully travelling to Heaven; in 'Follower', the setting is not a boring day in the fields ploughing, it's a small boy's idolisation of his father and attempt to follow in his footsteps. Whatever differences exist between both poems, the message is one: Losing is one of the hardest things a human being can witness, but we all have to lose in the end.

Commercial Transactions (Contracts) Essay

Abstract This week’s individual project will be in the form of an executive summary. The summary will be based on a series of questions concerning 1) the city of Bigtown’s advertising campaign (courtesy of the mayor), 2) possible similarities of this promotion to a court decision and 3) possible repercussions that could be encountered if not executed with caution. The court decision concerning John D.R. Leonard vs. PepsiCo is the basis of my summary. My conclusion will be an alternative suggestion to be decided on by Bigtown’s counsel. Unit 3 – Commercial Transactions (Contracts) Although Bigtown has devised creative advertising campaigns, our recent efforts to stimulate tourism have been unsuccessful. I am moved to address our current proposal to auction our fine city of Bigtown on eBay. Although this is sure to turn the heads of most WebCrawler’s our intentions are strictly fictitious (and should be displayed as such). Minimizing the potential of a frequent eBay auctioneer taking this â€Å"mock advertisement† seriously smacks of the â€Å"Pepsistuff†/Harrier jet incident that took place in 1996. If not for the ruling in1999 for reasons stated below, PepsiCo would have been the brunt of the deal of the century; advertising to sell a 23 million dollar government-owned fighter jet for a mere 7 hundred thousand dollars. (1)Some of the reasons the deal was not finalized was the contract was not valid. The buyer desired to buy the fighter jet and made an offer to PepsiCo. PepsiCo did not accept the offer (for obvious reasons) whereas the agreement is not mutual. When the buyer (John D.R. Leonard) did not see the Harrier Jet he desired on the ordering form to purchase the so-called â€Å"Pepsistuff†, this presents itself of not being a bargaining item, which means considering it is not valid. Being that the buyer did not consider the obvious humor PepsiCo was presenting in this advertisement leads one to think of the buyer’s capacity to reason sensibly. Which brings me to the final reason the contract was invalid; a Harrier Jet (much like Bigtown) is property of the U.S. government, property that is not considered a lawful object to be sold commercially, or in our case, in a web-based auction. These are the four elements that made this contract invalid (Cheeseman, 2006). (2)Let’s look closer at the case of PepsiCo and our proposed business suggestion. A soft drink company (though very large and quite successful) not affiliated with the United States Marine Corp in any way (except maybe to supply our troops with refreshing beverages) is giving away a fighter jet in a promotion; a promotion that would sell the jet for 3.04% of the government paid for it. Surely, this is an offer made in jest; the way the jet is presented in the commercial along with the seven million Pepsi points to be considered. No one with a sane sense of reason would consider this to be factual, which puts the contract void under the objective theory (Cheeseman, 2006). (3)Other reasons the court found the Pepsi agreement invalid; * The advertisement was not specific beyond the shadow of a doubt of the ways and means to obtain the item in question (if it were, that would be the exception to the rule). * The obvious limitation of the offer was not stated in the advertisement (how many of these jets could PepsiCo possibly have to offer?) * In the commercial, a student traveled to school in the Harrier jet. This premise alone makes the offer fantasy (PDF, 1997). (4)Advertisement are not offers, they are more like invitations. Think of our city of Bigtown as a bakery; the smell of fresh breads and pastries being blown on the street by an exhaust fan would surly attract the passersby. However, once they inspect where the heavenly scents are coming from is where the offers begin. The advertisement is use to attract the customer; by law, it does not have to do anything with what is being offered. Once the invitation is accepted, then the negations can begin (think of the sports cars with the blonde buxom bikini model; where are they when you by the sports car?). (5)If this were in fact a reward contract (unilateral), there would have been 1) some sort of promise that PepsiCo would have agreed to satisfy, such as promising to exchange the Harrier jet for the 7 hundred thousand dollars (which there was not) and 2) The conditions of his transaction were based on a loophole that the buyer concocted. The seller (PepsiCo) has to make the offer, accept the conditions, and commit to oblige the buyer’s payment. This never took place after John Leonard proposal with check and order form. Unilateral only requires that one side make a promise to (â€Å"If you do this, I promise to pay you _____†). In this instance a contract was never finalized, so the offer never existed (void contract). In a bilateral situation (â€Å"I promise to pay me_____, I promise to give you____†), the contract would have been valid. Unfortunately, this was also not the case; both sides would have had to agree (Wikipedia, 2010). In conclusion, it is obvious to see that if we are to consider this whole â€Å"Bigtown on eBay† campaign, the necessary measures to be implemented alerting the general public this is strictly humorous and should be taken in jest. Boosting the tourist of Bigtown is an issue that demands the corporation of our whole city council. Hopefully, the examples and suggestions given above will help us to avoid any legal entanglement. Free Essays on Crito

In Plato’s Crito, Socrates has been sentenced to death by the court of Athens and is being held until his execution. The Crito is the recorded account of the conversation between Socrates and his friend Crito, in which Crito is trying to convince Socrates that he should save his life and escape, while Socrates argues that he must stay and accept his punishment. One of the arguments concerning the point of view that it is morally right for Socrates to escape from prison and save his own life is the following: 1.) Socrates is a parent. 2.) A parent has a responsibility to provide and care for his or her child. 3.) If a parent neglects this responsibility than the parent is putting the child’s safety in jeopardy. 4.) It is morally wrong for a person to put another person’s safety into jeopardy. 5.) If a parent is not present in his or her child’s life it is the same as the parent neglecting his or her responsibility to provide and care for the child. 6.) If Socrates does not escape from prison and is executed he will be dead. 7.) If Socrates is dead he will not be present in his children’s lives. 7.) Therefore it is morally right for Socrates to escape from prison. Directly opposing this argument is the argument of why it is morally wrong for Socrates to escape from prison. 1.) It is morally wrong for a person to choose to do evil over good. 2.) The laws are set up to tell people how to act justly and to maintain peace and order within a society. 3.) It is morally right to maintain order and peace. 4.) Every citizen is morally required to follow the law to maintain order and peace within the city. 5.) Socrates is a citizen of the city of Athens. 6.) Socrates was convicted and sentenced to be executed according to the Athenian procedures of the law. 7.) Accepting the punishments given out by the law is the same as following the law. 8.) Breaking the law is choosing to do evil over good. 9.) If... Free Essays on Crito Philosophers have existed since man could think freely. However, by nature they are controversial and often disliked or misunderstood. Such is the case with Socrates in Plato’s Crito. Because of his views, Socrates has been thrown in prison. During his trial in Athens he was convicted of the accused crimes by the law and sentenced to death. Now Socrates awaits his death in prison. The first argument that Crito makes is that if Socrates remains in prison then it will reflect badly on all of his friends. However, Socrates replies that a man should not worry about what others think of him. Rather they should worry about living well. While Crito tries to persuade Socrates to leave the prison with him, Socrates gives forth many reasons why it would be wrong for him to leave the prison. First of all there is a simple principle that they must both agree upon. And that is that one cannot combat evil with evil. Once that is out of the way Socrates asks Crito, What is a man to do, â€Å"what he proclaims to be right or what he knows is wrong?† Obviously the answer is what a man proclaims to be right. However, in this case Socrates knows he should challenge the courts decision, but at what cost. For you see, Socrates has already proclaimed that evil cannot be combated with evil, and for him to be challenging the courts he would be defacing Athens laws and customs. To do this would be the same as doing wrong to the Athenian people. So in reality Socrates is caught in a â€Å"catch 22.† Socrates also explains that to harm the laws would be to deny his citizenship. The laws have always existed and have controlled his life since before he was born. The laws also governed his education and daily activities. In all actuality he is a slave to the laws. And as it is improper for a slave to disobey or strike his master, Socrates is unable to harm the laws, because they are on different planes of existence. Socrates also adds tha... Free Essays on Crito 1.) The Crito was written by Plato, who recounted the conversation held between Crito and Socrates just before his death. Socrates was charged with the corruption of the youth and was given a choice of exile or death. He chose death, and Crito was not at all happy about his decision. Crito felt that Socrates had been wronged by the government and should escape into exile. Socrates disagreed, saying that responding to evil with evil is wrong. If Socrates escaped, he would be doing harm to society as a whole. By escaping it could be seen as him trying to destroy the laws and in turn, the whole city by his actions, undermining the law. Socrates feels that â€Å"You must either persuade it [the laws] or obey its orders, and endure in silence whatever it instructs you to endure†¦ (p.51)† In other words, Socrates feels that it is wrong to protest the laws of the city because it disrupts the society, making them think that it’s okay to disobey laws and to protest and be violent against them, ultimately ruining the structural society. By escaping into exile, Socrates would be going against his own philosophy. Going into exile means that he would be fighting evil with evil and that he is not doing his part as a citizen. However, most importantly, Socrates feels that life is not worth living if the moral part of us is corrupted and that going into exile is doing moral harm. Socrates also knows that he made the decision to remain in Athens which means that he thinks the laws are just and right. If he felt they weren’t, he could have left and gone elsewhere at any time. However, he did not; therefore he made a social contract to obey the laws through his citizenship, and to accept his sentence of death that he himself chose. If Socrates thought exile was the right thing to do, he would’ve chosen that as his sentence instead. He did have a choice in the beginning, and there’s no turning back now. If he went into exile now an... Free Essays on Crito Philosophy 1010-008 Crito and Euthyphro Crito The "Crito" seems intended to exhibit the character of Socrates in two lights, one as the philosopher, and the other simply as the good citizen, who having been unjustly condemned is willing to give up his life in obedience to the laws of the State. The days of Socrates are drawing to an end. The fatal ship has been seen off Sunium. Time is precious and Crito has come early in order to gain his consent to plan an escape. Crito believes, his friends, who can afford to help Socrates’ escape to Thessely, or any other place, can easily accomplish this. Crito will have no difficulty in finding friends in Thessaly and other places, who would protect Socrates and welcome him to stay. Socrates is afraid that Crito is being influenced by the opinions of the many. Socrates believes that you should only value the opinions of the experts. You do not go to a shoe salesman with a question about your health, just as you don’t ask a doctor about the best shoe. â€Å"But why, my dear Crito, should we care about the opinion of the many? The most reasonable people, to whom one should pay more attention, will believe that things were done as they were done.† Crito. â€Å"But do you see, Socrates, that the opinion of the many must be regarded, as is evident in your own case, because they can do the very greatest evil to anyone who has lost their good opinion.† Socrates. â€Å"I only wish, Crito, that they could; for then they could also do the greatest good, and that would be well. But the truth is, that they can do neither good nor evil: they cannot make a man wise or make him foolish; and whatever they do is the result of chance. (Plato: Five Dialogues 44c-e).† â€Å"One should follow the opinion of the wise (physicians and trainers) with regard to the health of the body. Life would not be worth living in an unhealthy body.† According to Socrates if you take the advice of the many it is l...

Effects of Carbon Monoxide on the Body

Effects of Carbon Monoxide on the Body Carbon Monoxide (CO) Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and toxic gas produced as a bys of carbon monoxide producing devices commonly in use around the home include: Fuel fired furnaces (non-electric)Gas water heatersFireplaces and woodstovesGas stovesGas dryersCharcoal grillsLawnmowers, snowblowers and other yard equipmentAutomobiles Medical Effects of Carbon Monoxide Carbon monoxide inhibits the bloods ability to carry oxygen to body tissues including vital organs such as the heart and brain. When CO is inhaled, it combines with the oxygen carrying hemoglobin of the blood to form carboxyhemoglobin (COHb). Once combined with the hemoglobin, that hemoglobin is no longer available for transporting oxygen. How quickly the carboxyhemoglobin builds up is a factor of the concentration of the gas being inhaled (measured in parts per million or PPM) and the duration of the exposure. Compounding the effects of the exposure is the long half-life of carboxyhemoglobin in the blood. Half-life is a measure of how quickly levels return to normal. The half-life of carboxyhemoglobin is approximately 5 hours. This means that for a given exposure level, it will take about 5 hours for the level of carboxyhemoglobin in the blood to drop to half its current level after the exposure is terminated. Symptoms Associated With a Given Concentration of COHb 10% COHb - No symptoms. Heavy smokers can have as much as 9% COHb. 15% COHb - Mild headache. 25% COHb - Nausea and serious headache. Fairly quick recovery after treatment with oxygen and/or fresh air. 30% COHb - Symptoms intensify. Potential for long term effects especially in the case of infants, children, the elderly, victims of heart disease and pregnant women. 45% COHb - Unconsciousness 50% COHb - Death Since one cant easily measure COHb levels outside of a medical environment, CO toxicity levels are usually expressed in airborne concentration levels (PPM) and duration of exposure. Expressed in this way, symptoms of exposure can be stated as in the Symptoms Associated With a Given Concentration of CO Over Time table below. As can be seen from the table, the symptoms vary widely based on exposure level, duration and the general health and age on an individual. Also note the one recurrent theme that is most significant in the recognition of carbon monoxide poisoning - headache, dizziness and nausea. These flu like symptoms are often mistaken for a real case of the flu and can result in delayed or misdiagnosed treatment. When experienced in conjunction with the sounding of a carbon monoxide detector, these symptoms are the best indicator that a potentially serious buildup of carbon monoxide exists. Symptoms Associated With a Given Concentration of CO Over Time PPM CO Time Symptoms 35 8 hours Maximum exposure allowed by OSHA in the workplace over an eight hour period. 200 2-3 hours Mild headache, fatigue, nausea and dizziness. 400 1-2 hours Serious headache-other symptoms intensify. Life threatening after 3 hours. 800 45 minutes Dizziness, nausea and convulsions. Unconscious within 2 hours. Death within 2-3 hours. 1600 20 minutes Headache, dizziness and nausea. Pop Culture Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Pop Culture - Research Paper Example The young ones like to connect with the pop music because they believe this is them when they hum along to songs, attend concerts, be a part of the karaoke nights and basically have a good time within the pop domains. The pop culture within music has always been a good subject to comprehend because the pop music is more about loudness and bang-bang than any other thing. They focus less on how things are followed by the book but understand how things are done in a quick and hassle-free way. This is, therefore, some of the best-known reasons why pop music has been able to showcase the young artists, the teenage sensations, and so on and so forth. The pop music and indeed the pop culture does not represent or take into consideration the people from the older age segments or the ones who are facing mid-life issues. Lady Gaga’s influence on the pop music and indeed the generation of present times is something to write home about. She is one pop singer that has touched the zenith of success during her brief pop career. However, she has touched hearts of millions around the globe and has represented the pop culture in a way that has not been known to be linked with others in the pop music industry. Therefore the role of pop music within the popular culture of present times is an acknowledged one and is manifested for a number of different reasons. People have started to think that pop culture will basically put the young ones on the right track, whereby the latter can listen to songs all day long and remain calm all this while. If they indulge in some other activities which are unbecoming of their own selves, then that would not be a pardonable excuse at all. So it is always an appreciable act on the part of the elders in the current times to allow the manifestation of the pop music in its diverse forms. Pop Culture on Television How programming has been affected with television and how the same has been inter-linked with the pop culture is somewhat of an inter esting debate. This is because the pop culture has brought about a number of programming advancements within the realms of this select audience (McNicol, 2009). The young ones now feel that they have a separate and unique identity of their own, which is being represented through the different pop music channels and distinctive programs – all of which cater to the needs and requirements of the time. The children and teenagers know that they need to keep a close track of what is happening within the pop culture regimes so that they can come along well with the changing times and be considered hip and happening within their respective social circles. The need is to remain fast track with the amending technological documentations and this has been in the form of immense progress that has come about with the advent of the pop culture. Learning and Development Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Learning and Development - Coursework Example Another issue is the challenge of providing expert training from a centralized resource. There is need to centralize and diversify training programs from the headquarters to the branch offices. This will cut down on costs of training and effectiveness at the branch offices. Another issue facing the Ventura organization is the need to deliver training against very tight timetables. This is because when anew client is acquired there is a need to deliver the requirements needed by the customer in a timely manner without the client experiencing any level of uncertainty as relates to service provision according to Harrison (2009, p. 29) By allowing employees to attend conferences that focus on topics of relevance to their position and the organization and ensuring that the organization have the employee make a presentation to other staff as a way of promoting the individuals learning experience and as a way of enhancing the organization. This should act as some form of off-the-job learning. By selecting the best of these opportunities and coming up with critical incident notes for staff to learn from and apply in their daily work life. For example a case of a client complaint that was handled effectively. By writing a brief summary of the incident and identifying the employees actions that led to a successful resolution and then sharing the notes with the employee involved and with others as appropriate. Alternately, if the situation was not handled well, it is again important to write a brief description of the incident plus identifying areas for improvement. Fieldtrips can be seen as an off-the-job activity. It is important to do a follow up the field trip by having staff share and explain to the rest what they have learned and how they can apply that learning to the organization. There are several tools can be made available to employees to help them perform better in their jobs. These tools can range from; manuals, procedural guidelines,

Journal entry (economics topic) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Journal entry (economics topic) - Essay Example erefore, given that in times of economic crisis there is decreased tax revenue it became important to establish measures to resolve decreased revenues as a result of decline in profits, incomes, consumptions or increase in tax evasion (Ramona, Ionut, & Cristian, 2011). VAT has also increased its relevancy to bridge the gap that government have in national debt. VAT is administered effectively and has enabled some country reduce their national debt without raising the direct taxes on capital and labor (Ramona, Ionut, & Cristian, 2011). Therefore, VAT has been a powerful tool that enables economies address the macroeconomic issue such as unemployment and investment without disrupting the operation of a country. In conclusion, the government may increase or decrease the charge on VAT to address the economic crisis of the day rather than resulting to other measures to increase tax receipt. However, there are macroeconomic consequences with little severity compared to other alternative ways of raising revenue. VAT has become one the largest indirect tax and considered as a tax for the future. It is successful and does not burden one source only as it is shared among producers and users (Ramona, Ionut, & Cristian,

The Equal Rights Amendment

The Equal Rights Amendment Equality of Rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on the account of sex. (Eracampaign.com) The truth about the Equal Rights Amendment is that technically, under the constitution, women do not have the same rights as men do. Equality: the state or quality of being equal; correspondence in quantity, degree, value, rank, or ability. (dictionary.com) Every citizen in the United States, is striving to be equal as every other American, but the truth is the United States Constitution does not state that men and women have equal rights. The Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1923. Fifteen states choose not to ratify the amendment, these states include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. The mission of the Equal Rights Amendment is to confirm, and ratify an amendment that states, men and women have the same equal rights as one another. Alice Paul was the citizen who introduced the Equal Rights Amendment, and strived to show a greater message in her journey. Her message had become so widely popular, that it was more commonly referred as the Alice Paul Amendment then the Equal Rights Amendment. (equalrightsamendment.org) We are a national, non-partisan, single-issue, grassroots organization. Our mission is to build solidarity among Americans for ratifying and promulgating the Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution. (4era.org) The previous quotation is from a well known organization called 4era. The main purpose of this organization is to educated citizens of the need to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, so that both men and women are considered as equals. The view point of 4era is that they are trying to promote a true progression of a realistic democracy, and improve the United States society as a whole. This organization has conducted many different petitions and poles, to show what American citizens think about the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Another organization that has become widely popular is NOW, which has a similar mission that they are trying to receive. Some of the founders of NOW were Gene Boyer (1925-2003), Kathryn Clarenbach (1920-1994), and Inez Casiano (1926). In 1967 (NOW) ledges to fight until the ratification of ERA is put into place. (womenhistory.about.com) A majority of 4era reasoning for ratifying the constitution come from the many poles and petitions that they provide for United States citizens to take. In July 2001, 4era a survey was conducted for the Era Campaign Network in order to see a clear view of the American population. This survey involved 1,002 adults, comprising 500 men and 502 women- 18 years of age or older, living in private households in the continental United States. 4era conducts their surveys with the most advanced methods and technologies that are available to them. 95% of men agreed that men and women should have equal rights. 97% of women agreed that men and women should have equal rights. As far as you know, does the constitution make it clear that men and women citizens are suppose to have equal rights? 72% said yes. 18% said no. 10% said that they did not know. In your opinion, should the constitution make it clear that female and male citizens are supposed to have equal rights? 88% said yes. 9% said no. 3% said that they didnt know. This survey ended up showing that a majority of American citizens think that it is important that it is put into the constitution that men and women have equal rights. (eracampaign.net) There are several reasons why many organizations are for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Firstly, it would provide a constitutional and legal reason for both men, and women to have equal opportunities. This would end discrimination in the workplace, and any other institution that may be discriminate because of sex. In There would be no question of discrimination against either sex, because there rights would officially be protected in the U.S. Constitution. There are also several organizations that are against the ratification the amendment, including an organization called the Campaign Committee against the Equal Rights Amendment, though it later was disbanded in Feb.1939, for lack of money to keep the organization going. (now.org) Secondly, the Equal Rights Amendment would help clarify the status of sex discrimination for the courts. (equalrightsamendment.org) From then on, sex would be a determining factor for suspect classification, just as other factors are including different races. Men and women would have to be treated the same when it would come to such matters. Both sexes would receive the same equal treatment, when dealing with criminal facilities, and the treatment that they receive in these facilities while serving time. Lastly, in many American citizens opinions it would send a strong message to the entire United States of America. The fact is that there is no specific part of the amendment where is states that men and women are constitutionally allowed to have the same rights. In many peoples opinions, if the ratification doesnt happen soon the discrimination of women will become even harsher. The message that it would be sending is- the constitution has zero tolerance for sex discrimination under the law. The ERA is suspected to be very helpful. (equalrightsamendment.org) The Equal Rights Amendment will be very beneficial towards women, but it will also help other people, including males. For example, males that work in a workplace with more women typically do not get the salary that the females receive; if this amendment is past it will change this. Though not as severe, there is some discrimination against men in the US. There have been some cases in the past were American women have a child overseas. Under the constitution, that child will automatically become an American citizen. It is not the same for men, if a child is both from an American man, but not an American women, the child would not be American. If the Equal Rights Amendment is past it will change this, so these situations would no longer cause problems. (4era.org) There are many myths involving after the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. The first myth is that ERA will mean that women will have to be drafted along with men. This statement is incorrect. The truth is Congress already has the power to do so, even if this amendment is not passed. Women can still be drafted if they were needed to serve for their country. Article 1, section 8 of the constitution gives Congress the power to raise armies but does not specify gender or age limitations. (4era.org) The second myth that is commonly heard is the Era will allow same sex marriages across the United States. This is also untrue. Though in the ERA it states that men and women are guaranteed the same rights, but it does not state anything about marriage. When it states sex in the constitution it is only referring to gender, this also has the same stating in the 19th Amendment. The 19th Amendment also gives women the right to vote. Same-sex marriage is not covered in the ERA, and will not change after the ratification of the ERA. (4era.org) The third myth is that this amendment will not have any purpose because the rights of women are already protected under the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment states, No state shall make, nor enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property, without due process of law; now deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.(eracampaign.net). In actuality, there is no part of the amendment that says women are guaranteed the same rights as men are. The main purpose of passing the 14th amendment was to guarantee that African Americans were given the same rights, though African American women are not guaranteed under this amendment, as well as any other females. Though the 14th amendment has helped women a lot in the past, will different cases of discrimination, it is not a sure thing. There are many important people that have put the problem of womens rights into perspective. Betty Friedan led the National Organization for Women to its active support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Alice Paul was the main reason for ERA; she introduced the entire concept to the Congress in 1923. Alice Paul died on July 9th, 1977 at the age of 92. Gloria Steinem was both a feminist and journalist. She was the key figure in the womens rights movement from 1969. She also founded Ms. Magazine. She was often attacked by radicalisms, because she was believed to only promote benefits for women of the middle class. She was a very outspoken advocate for the ERA, and helped found the Nationals Women Political Caucus. She once quoted this, I have met brave women who are exploring the outer edge of human possibility, with no history to guide them, and with courage to make them vulnerable that I find moving beyond words. (womenshistory.about.com) There has been some controversy over the ERA, because some people are worried that it will have a negative effect on society. Though there have been similar problems in the past that have been resolved the same way. During the Civil War Act helped many people, including African Americans. Racism was a very huge issue, but after the Act was passed racism was no longer a factor and was no longer tolerated in the United States. The Equal Rights Amendment is very similar to the Civil War Acts. Just like the Civil War Acts eliminated the issue of racism, the Equal Rights Amendment will eliminate the issue of sex discrimination. (equalrightsamendment.org) In many citizens opinions, the time for the ratification has past and that there is no longer a chance that it will get ratified. Though, with the election of Barack Obama (2008 president) , many other people think that this is the perfect time for ratification. During an awards ceremony, a representative from the National Womens Political Caucus on July 14, 2009, that she wished to pursue trying to get the amendment ratified even further. During the assemble she announced, If we can get it to the floor, it can pass. This representative said that she was going to present the ideas to Congress on July 21, 2009. Though for different reasons, she was never able to present her ideas to Congress. (womenissues.about.com) There are been many recent events that have involved the ERA discussion, up-to-date members are still voting to expand the constitutional amendment strategy that would end any discrimination based on the qualities of sex, race, sexual orientation, marital status, ethnicity, national origin, color, or indigence. Members also call for further study of age, and the troubles that classes that are involved with the struggles of trying to get constitutional equality between all Americans. In my opinion I think that ratifying the amendment would solve a lot of discrimination problems that are faced every day in America. The National Constitutional Equality Amendment (CEA) Committee continues to look over the amendment. This organization produces much different information that is available to all of the public, so they can be educated on the topic. (now.org) Equality is a quality that cannot just be given to a person. It must be earned and achieved, by hard work, and determination. Though the ratification has been rejected in the past, many people feel the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment is needed, so that not only women no longer have to deal with discrimination, but every American have there our equality. Future events will shape what will happen with the Equal Rights Amendment, and the ratification of such amendment, but for now, the true is, under the Constitution of the United States of America women to not have equal rights such as men do.
